NORMAL ISN'T REAL: Session #2 – "Dave's Story"
Upcoming Events
This professional development session explores the concept of neurodiversity through Normal Isn’t Real, a documentary series featuring young adults who share their lived experiences with learning disabilities (LD) and ADHD. In “Dave’s Story,” participants will hear a 14-minute first-person account that illustrates how differently the brain can function from person to person—and how these differences shape learning, problem-solving, and self-perception. Dave offers an accessible explanation of neurodiversity, emphasizing the value of recognizing individual strengths rather than focusing solely on challenges or deficits. Building on the video, the session includes a guided presentation that connects Dave’s insights to practical strategies for postsecondary instruction and support. Participants will examine how embracing neurodiversity can enhance teaching effectiveness, foster student self-advocacy, and create more inclusive educational environments. The facilitator will conclude with an open Q&A, allowing attendees to discuss implications for their own practice. Designed to fit within a one-hour timeframe, this session provides clear, applicable guidance for working more effectively with neurodiverse learners.
